Two months before Avril’s thirteen birthday, the change happened- she started her menstrual cycle. Her mother and both grandmothers tried to tell her how wonderful this experience was. She felt her friends and teammates were honest with saying that it sucks, it hurts, we are being punished for Eve eating the apple, and society lies to us about it. Plus now that her second one has come, she has started gaining weight. Can you get pregnant from just having your cycle???

By her third cycle, her weight was becoming obvious to everyone, she was getting bumps, not pimples on her skin and her hair. The worst was that she felt like her hands and feet were growing. She was also sweating quite a bit, but it smelled sweet. She had hummingbirds following her around school and home from school. The boys started paying attention to her due to this sweet aroma.

As her fourth cycle approached, her mother had set up a doctor’s appointment. She had skin dropping that would fall from her skin and it would hurt if she nudged them. She never had freckles before and now she was forming unique little teardrop

shaped ones across her cheeks that landed in all different directions. Yes, she was much larger now and tried to hide under her gardening hat. The bumps at the tops of her head seem to be thick hair roots poking through her scalp. She is afraid to look. No one has noticed that she has been wearing her mother’s gardening boots and her father’s work gloves all week. Her nails are growing out green. She wants to tell the doctor, because her mom will freak out! It has to be this stupid period.
